3D Printer Comparison

 

The TEAM Prototyping facility houses 6 Different 3D Printing Systems.  For printer selection assistance, consult the chart below, or contact the Lab.

Polyjet Systems (QTY = 2)

FDM Systems (QTY = 3)

SLA System (Qty = 1)

Materials Type: Proprietary acrylate based polymer. Rigid White & Flexible Translucent (which can be combined to achieve intermediate mechanical properties).  Alternatively, Rigid Translucent/Clear (Clear achieved with polishing)
Properties: Variable mechanical properties but moderately low yield stress at highest stiffness. Behaves much like standard acrylic, unless blended with flexible material.  Alternative materials can be rubber-like in mechanical properties, or clear/translucent.
Type: ABS Plastic, PLA , other thermoplastics
Properties: ABS -  Very High Yield Stress, standard engineering plastic.
PLA – Plant derived plastic; Biodegradable. more rigid, more accurate than ABS.
Type: Methacylate Photopolymer Resin
Properties: (Similar to ABS) Higher yield point than Polyjet Prints.*Contact for Mechanical Properties 
Accuracy Extremely high: 16/32 micron layer thickness, Overall 0.05mm to 0.15 mm accuracy (depending on geometry).  Smallest free-standing feature approximately 0.25mm to 0.3mmSupport Structures:  Gel-Like secondary material (Removed with water jet).   Moderate/Good accuracy: 0.1mm minimum layer thickness (0.2mm standard), Overall 0.2-0.4mm accuracy depending on geometry. Smallest free-standing feature approximately 0.4mmSupport Structures: Same Material, or overhang structures where possible Good accuracy: 0.025mm to .1mm Layer Thickness.  0.1-0.3mm Overall Accuracy depending on geometry.  Minimum Feature 0.3mm.Support Structures: Posts which must be cut from body of printed part

Cost UC: (at cost) Standard Material (Rigid and Flexible):  $5/10 grams of build material + $3/10 grams of support material + $3/hr of build time + setup and cleaning fee. Pros Extreme accuracy, Parts can be printed as functional assemblies, functional prototypes (or direct application in light-duty).  Variable mechanical properties.  Near limitless geometric configurations High impact resistance, good accuracy. Less Expensive. Very rigid plastic with good impact resistance, great accuracy.
Cons Material (generally) not as strong as FDM, or SLA techniques. Cost is comparatively higher than FDM or SLA. Least accurate technique (visible layers), some geometry may not be printable. Support Posts may leave blemishes,  small build chamber
