The Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Davis invites applications from qualified candidates for Junior Specialist positions. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, engineering, chemistry, or related field, or equivalent research experience.

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

  • RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90% EFFORT)

Work under the direction of the CMGI Radiochemistry personnel on research projects. Work will involve confirming identity, assay purity and specific activity of radiopharmaceuticals, using analytical methods such as HPLC and ITLC methods, preparing buffers and reagents for radiochemical synthesis based on established methods by the lab or in the published literature, developing methods for calibrating radiation monitoring devices, performing chemical and radioactive materials inventories and maintaining safety documentation, and maintaining a clean, orderly and safe laboratory; label and dispose of biohazardous, chemical, and radioactive waste according to Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements. Under the direction of the PI, the candidate is expected to collect, organize, and present data, engage in lab meetings and discussions on research, and assist in the interpretation and publication of those data. The candidate’s significant and meaningful contributions described above will lead to authorship or acknowledgement on published work.

  • PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)

-  Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
-  Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
-  With support from the PI and other researchers in the lab, write journal articles based on the research conducted and analyzed.

  • UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

-  May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
-  Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
