Applicants are expected to possess aptitude and interest in engineering and careers in medical device development.

Successful applicants must meet the following prerequisites:

Bachelor’s Degree with 3.0 GPA

An undergraduate degree in engineering or closely related STEM field such as mathematics, chemistry, biology or physics with at least a 3.0 grade point average

Prerequisite Courses

  • 1 year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of Physics (equivalent to PHY 9A-C at UC Davis)
    • PHY 9A Course Description: Introduction to general principles and analytical methods used in physics for physical science and engineering majors. Classical mechanics. Mathematics through differential Calculus (equivalent to MAT 22B at UC Davis)
    • PHY 9B Course Description: Fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, optics.
    • PHY 9C Course Description: Electricity and magnetism including circuits and Maxwell's equations.
    • Applicants can use the provided course descriptions to determine if their physics classes have fulfilled the prerequisite or when looking for classes to fulfill it.
  • Minimum of two advanced (junior-level, senior-level, or upper division) engineering topics (e.g., mechanics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena)
  • Applicants to the program can fulfill the prerequisites by receiving a C or better in relevant college level courses or through professional experience in the field. Applicants that seek to fulfill the prerequisite through professional experience should list that experience explicitly on their CV/resume and articulate the relevant skills they developed through their work experience in the personal statement. The personal statement should demonstrate to the admissions committee how their work experiences have equipped them with the relevant engineering skills and knowledge in lieu of the required courses.
  • Coursework can be in-progress or upcoming at the time of applying.
  • Unsure if you have fulfilled the prerequisites? Email the Graduate Program Coordinator (mddadvising@ucdavis.edu) to review your previous coursework.

English Language Proficiency

Students are required to have obtained a previous degree at an institution where English is the sole language of instruction or demonstrated English-language proficiency through an appropriate exam such as TOEFL or IELTS as part of the admission requirements to the university. The minimum scores are 80 on TOEFL iBT, 7.0 on IELTS, and 115 on the Duolingo English test. Additional details are available on the English Language Examination page.

Students that fulfill the English language requirement for admission may still be required to complete appropriate English language courses, as described in the policy Graduate Student Course Requirements – English as Second Language (GC2018-02). Courses taken in satisfaction of this requirement do not count towards the units required for graduation.
