Applicants are expected to possess aptitude and interest in engineering and careers in medical device development.
Successful applicants must meet the following prerequisites:
Bachelor’s Degree with 3.0 GPA
An undergraduate degree in engineering or closely related STEM field such as mathematics, chemistry, biology or physics with at least a 3.0 grade point average
Prerequisite Courses
- 1 year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of Physics (equivalent to PHY 9A-C at UC Davis)
- Mathematics through differential Calculus (equivalent to MAT 22B at UC Davis)
- Minimum of two advanced (junior or senior-level) engineering topics (e.g., mechanics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena).
- Applicants to the MDD program can fulfill the prerequisites by receiving a C or better in relevant college level courses or through professional experience in the field. Applicants that seek to fulfill the prerequisite through professional experience should list that experience explicitly on their CV/resume and articulate the relevant skills they developed through their work experience in the personal statement. The personal statement should demonstrate to the admissions committee how their work experiences have equipped them with the relevant engineering skills and knowledge in lieu of the required courses.
English Language Proficiency
Students who have not obtained a previous degree at an institution where English is the sole language of instruction or demonstrated English-language proficiency through an appropriate exam such as TOEFL or IELTS are required to complete appropriate English language courses, as described in the policy Graduate Student Course Requirements – English as Second Language (GC2018-02). Courses taken in satisfaction of this requirement do not count towards the units required for graduation.
