The Simon Laboratory studies immune cell function in diseases associated with acute and chronic inflammation, with an emphasis on leukocyte recruitment by adhesion receptors and signaling molecules. The lab develops lab-on-a-chip systems that provide real-time imaging of force and molecular dynamics of leukocyte-endothelial interactions under defined shear stress. The lab also develops real-time tools to study the tissue level consequences and biomarkers to assess disease progression for diseases such as acute infection via antibiotic-resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria and chronic inflammatory atherogenesis.
