M.Eng. in Medical Device Development

Our new Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Medical Device Development is a cutting-edge program that promises to accelerate the career development of aspiring engineers in all disciplines who wish to pivot into the exciting field of medical devices.

During the intensive and focused 9-month graduate program, students will benefit from a carefully crafted curriculum and hands-on opportunities to develop new skills in medical product development, business and leadership, device fabrication and the engineering design process. Students will have direct access to state-of-the-art technology through Tech Foundry at Aggie Square, UC Davis’ Sacramento-based innovation hub, and will be able to interact with experts at the Graduate School of Management, School of Medicine and throughout the health sciences community. Prospective students, admitted students, current students, and industry partners can learn more about the program here.

Why Medical Device Development?

With the global medical device market projected to reach $800 billion by 2030, graduates of our Master of Engineering in Medical Device Development program will be at the forefront of a booming industry, poised to make significant contributions to improving patient care and quality of life worldwide. Our program will develop a cohort of talented engineers who understand the nuances, challenges and opportunities presented by today's medical device industry.

Prospective Students

The content of the program is intended to accelerate the career of the student interested in the biomedical device industry by developing skills in nine months that would typically be accrued over approximately 5-7 years of experience in the private sector.

The program is appropriate for a student with a bachelor’s degree in engineering interested in developing a more focused skill set for the private sector, a student in a STEM-related field (e.g., physics, chemistry) interested in pivoting into the field of biomedical engineering and medical device development, or could also serve students who decide to pursue an advanced professional degree in the health sciences or law.

Arthur McKenzie

"I never thought I would get to be in an operating room on this side of the cold metal table. Being in the room to see the physician’s perspective and the actual number of patients they see every day has been eye opening. I’m incredibly lucky being able to talk to the doctors, see the interactions between them and the rest of the staff, nurses, physical assistants and scribes and see what the actual needs are that require solutions. I owe the input of the doctors at the start of the design process to the incredible staff of the MDD Program."
