UC Davis-Chile Program Welcomes Eduardo Silva

Eduardo Silva was invited to give a seminar and to visit the UC Davis Chile program.

The UC Davis-Chile program has three main objectives: 1) Create a platform for collaborative research between UC Davis and Chilean researchers, to support life science innovation in Chile and California; 2) Effectively transfer life sciences technologies from UC Davis and from the collaborative programs of the UC Davis Chile center, to the Chilean industry; and 3) Link UC Davis’ educational programs and creation capacity with Chile.

Jennifer Choi Receives Grant for Education Research

Jennifer Choi received a Committee on Research Large Grant for her project titled, “Shedding light on undergraduates’ unsatisfactory problem solving performance in STEM: The role of knowledge structure, knowledge retention, and misconceptions.” Dr. Choi will be collaborating on the project with Ozcan Gulacar (Chemistry) and Marina Crowder (Molecular and Cellular Biology). 

Katherine Ferrara Receives Two Grants for Ultrasound Research

Katherine Ferrara has received a 5-year NIH R01 for her project, “Image-guided ultrasound therapy and drug delivery in pancreatic cancer.” 

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive and invasive cancer, with a median survival of 6 months and a 5-year survival rate of 6%. Although recent advances have been made in the understanding of PDAC development, effective therapies are lacking.

Yu Liu Is Student Paper Finalist for IEEE Ultrasound Symposium

Yu Liu, a PhD student in the Ferrara Lab, is a student paper finalist for the IEEE Ultrasound Symposium.

This is a significant honor. Only 2 or 3 percent of the applicants who request consideration are finalists. 

Yu Liu is first author of the paper, titled Quantitative MR-guided transient shear wave imaging for tissue elasticity assessment. Jingfei Liu, Brett Fite, Josquin Foiret, Kent Leach, and Katherine Ferrara are the paper’s co-authors.  

The Maury L. Hull and Karen S. Hull Endowed Professorship

UC Davis today announced receiving a $1 million bequest from Distinguished Professor Emeritus Maury Hull and Karen Slakey Hull to endow a professorship in biomedical engineering with a research emphasis in orthopedics. The Maury L. Hull and Karen S. Hull Endowed Professorship will continue the couple’s already substantial legacy at UC Davis.

Dean Jennifer Sinclair Curtis of UC Davis’ College of Engineering expressed thanks to the Hulls, who at their retirement in 2014 had a combined career of nearly 65 years at UC Davis.

Jamal Lewis Invited to Speak at BIC System-wide Symposium

Jamal Lewis will be an invited speaker at the 17th BIC Annual System-wide Symposium, which will be held at the University of California, San Francisco Mission Bay campus, from June 13 to June 15, 2016.

He will be giving a talk entitled, ‘Particulate-based immunotherapy for Type 1 Diabetes’, at the break-out session on Basic Therapeutics on Monday, June 13, 2016, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

3-D printing opens up new dimension for UC Davis surgeons

UC Davis physician Gary Raff was treating a 19-month-old with a congenital heart defect this January when he realized he had reached a rare crossroads – he wasn’t sure what to do next. The girl had a complex constellation of arteries coming off her heart and only 1 1/4 ventricles rather than the usual two.

TEAM Prints 3-D Heart Model to Assist UC Davis Pediatric Heart Center Surgeons

When UC Davis Pediatric Heart Center surgeons faced a complex patient case in January, they consulted with cardiologists, pediatric intensive care unit physicians, radiologists, and, for the first time, biomedical engineers.

The engineers added a new technology to the clinical care toolkit: a three-dimensional printer that could be used to create a model of the patient’s complex heart anatomy.
