Laura Marcu Elected as AAAS Fellow

Laura Marcu, professor in the biomedical engineering department, is among the eleven UC Davis professors elected to the 2020 class of fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society.

Rucha Joshi Receives Grant from VentureWell

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Rucha Joshi recently received a VentureWell Faculty Grant in recognition of their commitment to inclusive support of students who are creating innovations for positive social and environmental impact! This funding will support two new courses that will introduce students to complex global problems identified in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

VentureWell’s Faculty Grants program helps faculty and staff at institutions across the country develop or sustain courses and programs that encourage STEM innovation.

Student Spotlight: Amy Becker

From presenting research to policy makers via the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) Science Translators Showcase held at the California State Capitol, to being named a UC Davis 2020 Bradshaw Scholar, Amy Becker has been quite busy this year. We caught up with the Ph.D. candidate and Boone Lab researcher for a first-hand view of her experiences and her vision for the future.

Global Aggies: Serving Nicaraguan Students with Special Needs

Each year the Blum Center for Developing Economies partners with the UC Davis Undergraduate Colleges to select, mentor, and sponsor a cohort of students to conduct fieldwork on poverty alleviation, inequality and international development through the Blum Summer Fellowship in Poverty Alleviation Through Action (PATA) award programs. In summer 2019, Laura Oelsner, a biomedical engineering major in the College of Engineering, was one of the selected Fellows who had this experience.

Paralyzed rats walk again after experimental treatment

Karen Moxon, a professor of biomedical and mechanical engineering at UC Davis, showed that a combined therapeutic regimen of drugs and physical therapy promoted cortical reorganization that bypassed a spinal cord injury, allowing paralyzed rats to walk again.
